Exfoliating your face is a great way to renew your skin. With the ability to remove more dirt, oil, and grime than a normal cleanser, an exfoliating cleanser can also remove the top layer of dead skin cells that can sit on your skin and cause it to look dull, unhealthy, and drab.

Even if you’re taking care of your skin by properly cleansing, moisturizing, and using specific skin treatments, your skin won’t really radiate a healthy glow until you begin exfoliating on a regular basis.

KULCBD KULCBD specializes in luxury skincare, including some great products to help exfoliate your skin safely, gently, and effectively on a daily basis, followed by a serum that can replenish skin to leave it feeling nourished and healthy all day and night. Our products contain a blend of all-natural plant botanicals, full spectrum CBD oil, and lactobacillus probiotic to ensure your skin gets the nourishing ingredients it needs to look supple and healthy.

Exfoliating on a daily basis can give you the radiant, healthy skin “glow” you want, and allow your other products to penetrate more deeply and become more effective. In this article, we’ll discuss what exfoliating is, how it can benefit your skin, when and how to exfoliate, and how to properly treat your skin post-exfoliation.

What is Exfoliation?

Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells from the surface of the skin by means of either a granular substance (like apricot seed powder or sugar), a chemical (like alpha hydroxy acid), or an exfoliating tool like a brush or cloth. This process stimulates cellular turnover, which makes your skin look healthier, polished, and younger. This is because our skin’s cellular turnover slows as we age.

When we are babies, our skin renews every three to four days, which is why a baby’s skin is so smooth and soft. That cellular turnover rate means a baby’s skin is virtually brand new every week. As we age, the cellular turnover rate slows significantly. In fact, in our twenties, the process slows to about 12 to 14 days, and by our forties we can expect new skin every one to two months. This decrease in cellular turnover not only means your skin doesn’t look and feel as soft as it once did, but it also means there is a higher risk for the development of fine lines and wrinkles.

What are the Benefits of Exfoliating?

Exfoliating does more than just create smoother, softer-looking skin. The benefits of daily exfoliating are virtually immeasurable. Here are some of our ultimate favorites!

Promotes newer, fresher looking skin. It’s worth mentioning again; exfoliating helps support fresh, healthy skin. This is so important as we get older because our skin just simply doesn’t turn over skin cells as quickly. When our skin cells don’t turn over as quickly, our skin looks dull, lackluster, and unhealthy.

Those dead skin cells can also clog pores, which can lead to the occurrence of acne. Anything that lays on the surface of your skin clogs your pores and can be a major source of pimples. If you struggle with acne, removing dead skin cells can be a godsend for getting rid of irritants that clog your pores.

Provides anti-aging effects. We all know that new skin is younger and healthier-looking skin. Exfoliating makes fine lines and wrinkles appear less noticeable because things that lay on the surface of your skin can sit in fine lines and wrinkles and make them appear deeper. Additionally, smoothing down your skin and removing that first layer of dead skin can also lessen the appearance of fine lines by making them appear less deep.

Promotes even skin tone. If you have any superficial scars (scars that do not go deep below the surface of the skin), exfoliating can help to make them appear less noticeable. Acne scars and marks from cuts or scrapes can all benefit from daily exfoliation. These scars tend to hide out on the epidermis, the extreme upper layer of skin. When you remove the dead skin cells from this upper layer and stimulate your skin, the scars naturally appear to fade and appear less noticeable.

Promotes the appearance of oil-balanced skin. If you’re using a high-quality exfoliant, your skin shouldn’t feel stripped of natural oils when you're done exfoliating. Your skin should feel supple and soft. This is because exfoliating encourages a healthy balance of oils in the skin. When your skin releases natural oils, your skin benefits by being moisturized and replenished with these oils.

Allows other products to work more effectively. Skincare products work best when they are able to penetrate the skin deeply. Products cannot penetrate deeply and do their job if they are simply laying on top of a layer of dead skin cells. This means that the products you currently put on your skin are likely being underutilized because they can’t penetrate as they should. When you exfoliate, you not only remove things that clog the skin’s pores, you also open the pores so they can absorb the product more properly.

It’s important to know the basics of exfoliating and how to do so properly. Pick the wrong product, and you could actually end up damaging your skin. Some exfoliating cleansers, for instance, contain exfoliating granules that are much too large and can actually create tears in your skin. This can cause serious skin inflammation and damage that can even lead to scarring in some cases.

Exfoliating devices (scrubbers, clothes, and brushes) can create even more damage. Because we aren’t able to finely control how hard we scrub, these devices can also tear the skin and become extremely abrasive. Additionally, they are known harbors for germs. Even if you rinse them well, they typically hang out in your shower or by your sink, in places that are dark and moist, which can be breeding grounds for bacteria. That bacteria is then transferred to your face when you use the product to exfoliate, and if the scrubbing device causes a tear in your skin, that bacteria goes right inside.

Instead, you need to find a method of exfoliating that is gentle, yet still effective. A great product for exfoliating is apricot seed powder. Apricot seed powder is a mildly abrasive powder that has been made from crushed apricot seeds. While some products contain actual apricot seeds or chunks, these are normally too abrasive for your skin and can actually be damaging. KULCBD’s CBD Exfoliating Cleanser contains apricot seed powder, which allows your skin to be exfoliated gently, yet effectively.

With a gentle exfoliating cleanser, you should exfoliate daily. Depending on how well your skin tolerates exfoliation and how gentle your exfoliant is, you can actually exfoliate twice daily; once in the morning, and once in the evening. This is a great option since most of us use daytime and nighttime specific products after we cleanse our skin. As such, we can exfoliate prior to applying those products and expect that they will penetrate better than they would if we did not exfoliate.

Exfoliate your skin by using a dime-sized amount of exfoliating cleanser. Beginning on your cheeks, gently rub the cleanser onto your skin in a circular motion. Be sure you do not scrub or press hard; let the exfoliant in your cleanser do the work. Once you have moved the product over your entire face, rinse with warm water. This will allow the pores to stay open so that the product you apply afterward can penetrate more deeply and effectively. You can also check out our How To Exfoliate video for a little more guidance! Once your skin has been perfectly polished by your exfoliating cleanser, you can take your pick of products to use on your freshly primed skin. This is the perfect time to apply your anti-aging moisturizers with their fabulous power-packed formulas, or your facial serums that pack a concentrated amount of skin-quenching ingredients and antioxidant powerhouses.

Once you’ve exfoliated, it’s very important that you moisturize your skin, as your skin will have been stripped of some of its own natural moisture. A great moisturizing agent is CBD oil. CBD oil has the ability to support your skin’s oil production, helping dry areas retain moisture better, and reducing the amount of oil produced in oily areas. This can be a great help for people with combination skin types.

Another great resource for your skin post-exfoliating is a hydrating facial serum. Facial serums are highly concentrated for your skin and pack essential ingredients like probiotics, plant botanicals, and antioxidants to help the skin renew a youthful and healthy glow.

In Summary

Exfoliating is the best way to remove dead skin cells, rejuvenate your skin, and support glowing, healthy skin. You should always ensure you use a high-quality, non-damaging exfoliating agent when you exfoliate, as some exfoliants can be too harsh and end up making your skin look and feel worse. A gentle exfoliating cleanser can be used both daily and nightly, and should always be followed up with products that hydrate and nourish your skin.
